To prevent crime and strengthen security, motorcycle patrols will be increased in the alleyways of the capital, announced Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali.

He made this statement on Tuesday while presiding over the crime review meeting for February 2025 at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium in Rajarbagh.

Regarding the police's role in preventing muggings, the DMP commissioner said that although mugging incidents initially surged at the beginning of Ramadan, police operations have significantly curbed them.

He urged police personnel to continue their efforts sincerely and said: “Auxiliary police will also be empowered to make arrests, with police stations providing them necessary support.”

Discussing urban security measures, the commissioner further said that the police will respond to general diary (GD) entries within an hour and provide a flash report from the scene.

Motorcycle patrols in alleyways will be increased, and strict action will be taken to execute arrest and sentencing warrants, he said.

Ahead of the upcoming Eid, he urged city dwellers to remain vigilant to ensure the security of homes and businesses.

Additional Police Commissioner (Crime & Operations) SN Md Nazrul Islam noted that many muggers have been arrested in recent times, leading to significant control over mugging incidents in the capital.

However, he warned: “Muggers do not belong to any specific profession, and they may resort to crimes during Eid. Their activities might increase, particularly in Gabtoli and Mohakhali, so police must remain alert.”
