Police block anti-rape protesters' march towards chief adviser’s residence

Clashes took place between protesters and police

Police have intercepted a protest march towards the chief adviser’s residence, where demonstrators demanded the maximum punishment for those responsible for rape, violence, and torture against women.

The march, organized under the banner of “Bangladesh against rape and torture”, was met with resistance from law enforcement, leading to clashes between protesters and police.

The confrontation took place in front of the Intercontinental Hotel in the capital around 3pm on Tuesday.

The protesters attempted to break through a police barricade but were stopped, resulting in a scuffle.

Meanwhile, students from 30 colleges in Dhaka have gathered in Shahbagh, also demanding stricter punishment for perpetrators of violence against women.

Since Tuesday morning, students arrived in small processions at the National Museum, chanting slogans against rape.

At around 1:20pm, they blocked the Shahbagh intersection, halting traffic movement in the area. However, around 1:35pm, they moved off the roads and resumed their demonstration in front of the museum.
