MRT Line 1 to be constructed in coordination with Purbachal Expressway

Several design changes ensure MRT and expressway coordination

The metro rail project MRT Line 1 will be constructed with proper coordination with the Purbachal Expressway.

To achieve this, every step of the project's design formulation has been closely coordinated with Rajuk, the 24 Engineer Construction Brigade of the Bangladesh Army, and the consulting firm of the Purbachal Expressway project, according to information provided in a press release signed by Md Abul Kashem Bhuiyan, director of the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project (Line 1), on Monday. 

The press release mentioned that several small and large design changes have been made to maintain coordination between the Purbachal Expressway and MRT Line 1.

To ensure connectivity with the new town in Purbachal and uninterrupted traffic flow, multiple meetings have been held between Rajuk, DMTCL, the Army, and the consulting firm concerned.

Under the MRT Line 1 project, an 11-meter-wide area along the central island of the Kuril-Purbachal Link Road will be blocked, but three lanes on both sides will remain open to ensure smooth traffic movement.

Additionally, several key decisions have been made to ensure integrated development:

  1. The intersection design of MRT Line 1, the Dhaka Bypass Road Project, and the Kuril-Purbachal Link Road development project will be reviewed and re-presented.
  2. A temporary metal platform covering 7,700 square metres will be constructed near the Joar Sahara Station and will be removed after construction is completed.
  3. Rajuk has approved the expansion of the bridge over the Boalia River and the construction of a long-span steel truss bridge at the Balu Bridge.
  4. Land along the 300 Feet Road in Purbachal New Town will be used for the entry and exit pathways of the elevated station.
  5. Any damage to the expressway will be minimized and necessary restoration measures will be taken.
  6. The transition area from the underground to the elevated section of MRT Line 1 will use land along the 300 Feet Road.

The press release further said that there has been no lack of coordination during the project's implementation, and all relevant agencies have been working in a coordinated manner.
