Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has launched a campaign to repaint graffiti commemorating the July uprising on metro rail pillars in Mirpur, inviting residents to take part in the initiative.
DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam inaugurated the “Let’s Remake July Graffiti” campaign on Friday.
The city corporation will provide paint, brushes and other necessary materials to participants, according to a DNCC statement.
Speaking at the inauguration, Shafiqul said the corporation had earlier announced a 72-hour deadline to remove posters from the metro rail pillars. The posters were removed ahead of the deadline with the help of local leaders, particularly those from Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal and Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, he said.
He said the next step was to replace the posters with July graffiti to honour those who sacrificed their lives and contributed to the country’s history.
Shafiqul also announced plans to include an image of former prime minister Khaleda Zia on the pillars, citing her contribution to the July uprising.
Graffiti will also feature leaders of the July movement, including Chhatra Dal leaders and representatives of other political parties, he said.
“We will not politicize this initiative. We will paint graffiti to record each person’s contribution in the pages of history,” he added.
