Sharmeen Murshid: Bangladesh has become a land of cowards

'We will make sure the accused receive the harshest punishment'

Update : 08 Mar 2025, 08:58 PM

Adviser to the Ministry of Social Welfare Sharmeen S Murshid said that the country has become cowardly, while talking about the rape of an eight-year-old child in Magura.

On Saturday, while visiting the child at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, she said: "I will talk to the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure that the culprits are not spared in any way. We will make sure the accused receive the harshest punishment."

Expressing her anger, she said: "How could anyone touch a girl who hasn't even grown into a girl, who hasn't become a woman? The cowards who touched the body of an eight-year-old girl are roaming around as men."

She added: "First of all, everyone should pray that the child survives. The doctors are doing their best. Journalists also have a responsibility in such cases. Please, do not justify the culprits in any way. These incidents are happening repeatedly. We cannot allow this to continue. We have evidence, we have the suspects, and we will not let this go unnoticed. This must be monitored closely."

The social welfare adviser further said: "It is your responsibility too to suppress these people. Do you think society is healthy? Do you think I can change a decaying society in just six months? The child is fighting for her life, the doctors don't know if they can save her. The doctors are working, and young boys and girls are protesting. I will do my utmost to ensure that this child receives the highest form of justice."
