Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury on Friday urged the younger generation to remain united and vigilant against extremism, communalism, and various forms of social degradation.

Healthy cultural practices are an effective tool to free society from the influence of harmful culture. The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has taken joint initiatives with different ministries and institutions to attract youths to cultural activities, he said.

The minister made the remarks while inaugurating the first Community Police Kabaddi Championship-2026 at Nomani Maidan in Magura, said a press release.

He said traditional rural sports and folk traditions, including kabaddi, dariabandha and boat races, which have been practised in Bengal for thousands of years are integral part of the country’s culture.

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs is working to make these traditional sports more popular and widespread, he said. He also stressed the importance of showcasing traditional sports, including boat racing, which is closely associated with the lives and culture of the people of riverine Bangladesh, to the new generation.

The minister said police are not only friends of the people and protectors of their security, but also play a leading role in implementing various public welfare programs of the government.

Organising sports and cultural activities for police alongside community policing could play an important role in further strengthening close relation between the police and the people, he added.

Earlier, the cultural affairs minister laid the foundation stone of Shaheed Minar at Nomani Maidan.
