The Dhaka District Police issued a statement on Tuesday urging everyone to refrain from posting sensitive information, such as robberies, on social media without proper verification.
The appeal followed a false social media post claiming a dacoity had occurred in South Keraniganj.
According to the statement, a Facebook status was posted from an account under the profile name "Mdsulaiman Mridha," alleging that a robbery had taken place in the area.
However, a police investigation confirmed that the claim was false.
To verify the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police Jahangir Alam, Keraniganj Circle, Dhaka, visited the location.
During the inspection, local residents informed the police that the house owner had shouted "robber, robber" between 1:30-2am on Monday night and had called the national emergency number, 999.
However, when the owner opened the collapsible gate in front of witnesses, everything inside the house was found to be intact, confirming that no robbery had taken place.
The police statement further noted that the house owner’s call to 999 was seemingly made solely for the purpose of posting on social media.
It emphasized the importance of fact-checking before sharing such information online.
