The students of the seven government colleges affiliated with Dhaka University have raised six demands, including the resignation of Dhaka University’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Mamun Ahmed.
They have given a 4-hour ultimatum to fulfill their demands. If their demands are not met within this time frame, they will announce a more intense movement.
On Sunday night, a clash occurred between students of Dhaka University and those from the seven affiliated colleges. In response, on Monday at noon, the students of the seven colleges held a press conference where they presented their demands.
The press conference was held in front of the Shaheed Minar at Dhaka College. Sumaiya Akter, a student from Eden College, read out the written statement and presented the six demands.
The six demands are:
Dhaka University administration must apologize for the conflict between Dhaka College students and Dhaka University students. The Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Mamun Ahmed must resign.
The police officers involved in the brutal assault on Dhaka College students, including the assault on student Rakib and the unjustified attack by Newmarket police station officers, should be removed. They should face departmental action based on investigation.
The individuals responsible for making derogatory comments and inappropriate gestures towards female students from Eden College, Badrunnessa College, and the other seven colleges must be brought to justice.
The academic and administrative relationship between Dhaka University and the seven colleges should be completely severed. A framework for an independent university must be established based on the students’ demands, and this must be done within four hours.
A high-level meeting should be arranged immediately to resolve the situation, involving the chief adviser, education adviser, Adviser Nahid Islam, members of UGC, and the vice chancellor of Dhaka University, along with a representative team of the seven colleges.
The roads in areas related to Dhaka University and the city corporation should be opened for public use.
During the press conference, Sajib Uddin, a student of Dhaka College, announced the 4-hour ultimatum for the fulfillment of these demands.
Meanwhile, the Dhaka University administration is holding a meeting on Monday with the principals of the seven colleges. The meeting is taking place in the lounge near the vice-chancellor’s office.
The Dhaka University administration's team includes Vice-Chancellor Neaz Ahmed Khan, Pro-Vice Chancellor Mamun Ahmed, Saima Hossain Vidisha, Treasurer Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, and Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed. The principals of the seven colleges are also present.
Earlier on Sunday, tensions between students of Dhaka University (DU) and seven affiliated government colleges escalated and continued into the early hours of Monday.
The conflict started when several hundred students from the affiliated colleges staged a sit-in at the Science Lab intersection for about four and a half hours.
Around 10:30pm on Sunday, the protesters marched towards the residence of DU Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mamun Ahmed, and continued their protest in front of the Mukti O Gonotontro Toron at Nilkhet intersection.
The situation intensified when hundreds of DU students emerged from various halls and chased the protesting students away from the Nilkhet intersection.
The affiliated college students regrouped and counter-chased the DU students -- leaving many injured.
By midnight, the police intervened, throwing sound grenades to disperse the crowd and control the escalating situation.
Four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members were deployed to maintain order.
In light of the situation, the Dhaka University administration has announced the suspension of classes and examinations for today. Additionally, all final exams scheduled for today in the seven affiliated colleges have also been postponed.
