Bhorer Kagoj announces closure amid salary dispute

Closure under Labor Act invoked, wage demands by contracted journalists sparked unresolved conflict

Update : 20 Jan 2025, 03:30 PM

The daily Bhorer Kagoj has announced the cessation of its publication.

On Monday, the newspaper's ownership issued a notice declaring the shutdown.

Several responsible journalists from Bhorer Kagoj confirmed the matter.

It has been learned that for the past few days, some journalists at Bhorer Kagoj were protesting to demand salaries according to the 8th Wage Board and payment of arrears from their date of appointment.

On Sunday, a group of journalists, along with union leaders and outsiders, held a rally in front of the newspaper's headquarters.

In response, the ownership issued the shutdown notice on Monday.

The notice stated that under Section 12 of the Labor Act 2006, the decision to close the newspaper's main office was made due to reasons beyond the owner's control.

A senior journalist at Bhorer Kagoj clarified that no employee had unpaid salaries.

However, the issue arose because some journalists, hired on a consolidated basis, were demanding wages as per the 8th Wage Board, leading to the conflict.
