For the past two days, the capital has been shrouded in thick fog, with the sun failing to break through the haze.
The temperature has dipped by 2°C compared to the previous day, intensifying the winter chill on Thursday.
The drop in temperature, coupled with cold winds, has heightened the discomfort, with the Bangladesh Meteorological Department predicting that temperatures could decrease slightly further in the coming days.
According to the Meteorological Department, a broad area of high-pressure system over the subcontinent has extended to the western regions of Bangladesh and its surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, the usual seasonal low-pressure system is positioned over the South Bay of Bengal, extending to the Northeast Bay of Bengal.
Meteorologist Tarif Nawaz explained that while the temperature in Dhaka is relatively higher than in other regions, the persistent cold winds are making the winter feel harsher. He further noted that the temperature in the capital could drop marginally, while temperatures in the northern and western parts of the country may decrease slightly more.
The 24-hour weather forecast predicts dry weather across the country with partly cloudy skies. From midnight to noon, moderate to dense fog is expected nationwide. The fog may disrupt air travel, inland river transport, and road traffic temporarily.
The night temperatures are likely to remain unchanged, but daytime temperatures could fall by 1 to 2°C. The dense fog may prolong the winter chill in certain areas during the day.
In the last 24 hours, Chuadanga recorded the lowest temperature in the country at 9.8°C, down from 11.8°C the previous day. Dhaka’s temperature fell to 13.8°C from 15°C, while in Rajshahi, the temperature dropped from 12°C to 10.5°C.
In Rangpur, the temperature remained unchanged at 12.5°C, and Mymensingh saw a decrease of 2°C, with the temperature standing at 13.5°C. Sylhet’s temperature remained steady at 16.2°C.
The port city of Chittagong recorded a slight temperature drop from 16.5°C to 15.7°C, while Khulna experienced a 2°C drop, with the temperature reaching 12.3°C compared to 14.5°C the previous day. Barishal’s lowest temperature remained almost unchanged at 14.5°C, compared to 14.3°C earlier.
The Meteorological Department advises the public to stay alert, as the ongoing fog and cold weather could impact daily activities in the coming days.
