Srimangal in Moulvibazar has recorded the lowest temperature in the country for four consecutive days, although the cold has eased somewhat during the daytime due to stronger sunshine.

The temperature was recorded at 10.3°C at 6am on Tuesday, while the day’s lowest — 10.2°C — was logged at 9am, according to the Srimangal Meteorological Observatory.

The previous day, the temperature stood at 10.2°C at 6am and dropped to 10.0°C at 9am, which was also the lowest in the country. Srimangal similarly recorded the lowest temperatures nationwide on Sunday and Saturday, including on January 24.

Senior observer Rakibul of the Srimangal Meteorological Observatory said the temperature is likely to remain around the same level for a few more days. “Although the cold is felt more during the evening and night, light to moderate fog may occur in the morning,” he said.

Residents of the area said the cold spell has been particularly harsh at night. Tapan Vaidya, who lives in a tea garden area, said the chill has been intense over the past few days, especially during the evening and after midnight. Rakib Ali, a resident of the Hail Haor area, echoed the same experience, noting that the cold is most severe at night.
