Prof M Tamim, a distinguished academic and expert in petroleum and mineral resources engineering, assumed the role of Vice Chancellor at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) on December 23, 2024.
According to a circular issued by the Ministry of Education on December 17, 2024, the Honorable President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and Chancellor of Universities appointed Prof Tamim to this position for a four-year term.
Prior to joining IUB, Prof Tamim served as a Professor of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Engineering and Dean of the Faculty of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
He holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from BUET, a master’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-Madras) and a Ph D in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Alberta, Canada.
Prof Tamim’s research expertise includes reservoir engineering, energy economics, regulation and planning, the development and application of numerical and analytical computer models and reservoir management.
His work has also focused on greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation, energy efficiency enhancements and environmentally sustainable energy solutions.
Over the course of his career, he has supervised numerous M Sc students and published extensively in both national and international journals.
Since 1995, Prof Tamim has played a significant role in energy policy formulation, planning and regulation under successive governments.
In 2008, he took a one-year leave from academia to manage the Power and Energy Ministry during the tenure of the caretaker government.
Additionally, he briefly served as the Pro-Vice Chancellor of BRAC University from 2019 to 2020.
Prof Tamim is a founding Chairperson and member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Bangladesh Section, and a Life Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB).
