Dhaka University (DU) has implemented restrictions on the entry of external vehicles, allowing access only during specific hours—after 3pm on holidays and between 5pm and 10pm on regular days.
While the move has eased campus life for students, it has caused considerable inconvenience for outsiders.
On Saturday, many people were seen waiting with their vehicles, as only those with urgent needs were permitted entry.
This has forced others to turn back and take alternative routes, worsening traffic congestion on surrounding roads.
Outsiders have voiced their frustration, labeling the restrictions a major inconvenience.
At the entrance near the National Museum in Shahbagh, Shahriar Nafiz, a college teacher, expressed his concerns: "Controlling access to roads within Dhaka University is not practical. These restrictions shift the burden to other roads, increasing public suffering. This is not just a local issue but impacts the entire city due to the university's central location."
Motorcyclist Siraj Uddin shared a similar sentiment: "This route is a faster option for many of us, but these restrictions force us to use main roads, creating an influx of vehicles and worsening traffic congestion. The city corporation and DU administration need to collaborate on a long-term solution."
In response, the university’s Proctor's Office issued a notice on Saturday, stating that the restrictions aim to ensure the safety of students by regulating vehicle movement within the campus.
