Authorities have cancelled the hall seats of two Dhaka University students at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall following allegations of homosexual activity.
Hall Provost Md Akhteruzzaman confirmed the matter on Wednesday, saying both students were removed from the hall after the matter came to the administration’s attention.
He said their seats were cancelled following the allegations.
The hall administration has formed a three-member investigation committee, headed by House Tutor and Assistant Proctor Rezaul Karim Shohag, to investigate the matter.
Ahmed Al Sabah, general secretary of the Mujib Hall Students’ Union, said both students are first-year students.
He claimed that photos and videos of their alleged activities had been obtained and that the students later confessed when confronted. Following this, their hall seats were cancelled and they were expelled from the hall in the presence of two assistant proctors.
One of the students, however, alleged that the action was “politically motivated.”
“I am not involved in anything of this sort,” he said. “My roommate had been asking me various political questions for some time. Since my home is in Gopalganj, he would ask me about the influence of different political parties there.
“Now, because of the past 17 years of Awami League rule, people have come to associate Gopalganj with something negative. Whenever I mention that I’m from Gopalganj, many people look at me with suspicion.
“The video and photos presented as evidence were taken by the same roommate, who has a close relationship with the hall union’s general secretary.”
He further claimed that his roommate had handed the photos and videos to the general secretary.
Regarding political affiliation, he said: “Right after the incident, I was labeled a Chhatra Dal activist. That’s a rumor. I am not affiliated with any political party.
