A decision has been made to remove the name “Bangabandhu” from the Bangabandhu Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture at Jahangirnagar University (JU).

The decision was taken in a syndicate meeting held in the university's new administrative building on Sunday evening, presided over by the Vice-Chancellor Prof Kamrul Ahsan.

After the meeting, JU Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Sohel Ahmed confirmed the matter to the media on Sunday night.

When asked about the decision, he said: "The decision to change the name was taken in the syndicate meeting in response to student demands."

Regarding the issue, Meherab Sifat, the coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement from JU, said: "In the aftermath of the mass uprising, we have been fighting against discrimination to build a new Bangladesh. The Comparative Literature and Cultural Institute has a long history of oppression. Our struggle for anti-discrimination has triumphed through the reform of the name."
