Update : 04 Sep 2024, 12:20 PM

Former Awami League MP Haji Mohammad Salim, who had fallen ill in police remand, was taken to court from Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Wednesday morning and subsequently sent to jail.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Akhtaruzzaman issued the order following a court hearing.

Haji Salim was on a five-day remand in a case filed over the killing of Ideal College student Khalid Hasan Saifullah, granted by the same court on Monday.

He was admitted to the hospital late on Tuesday night after falling ill during interrogation at the Detective Branch office.

In a report, the investigating officer noted that Haji Salim had provided significant information during questioning, but his deteriorating health made it difficult to continue the interrogation.

The officer requested that Haji Salim be held in jail, suggesting that further remand might be necessary for the ongoing investigation.

During the Anti-discrimination Student Movement on July 18, Khalid Hasan Saifullah, a first-year student at Ideal College, was fatally shot in Lalbagh.

Following the incident, his father, Kamrul Hasan, filed a murder case with Lalbagh police station on August 19, naming 52 people as accused, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Haji Mohammad Salim.

Haji Salim was arrested in the early hours of Monday in the case in the Bangshal area of the capital.

Later, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Akkas Mia of Lalbagh police station, presented Haji Selim in court and requested a 10-day remand for questioning. The court granted a five-day remand.

Earlier, in 2008, Haji Salim was sentenced to 13 years in prison in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission for illegally accumulating wealth.

Later, in 2022, the High Court reduced the sentence to 10 years.

Haji Salim first became a member of parliament in 1996, representing the Dhaka-8 constituency from the Awami League.

He lost the 2001 general election to the late BNP leader Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu.

In the 2014 election, he ran from the Dhaka-7 constituency as an independent candidate and defeated the Awami League's Mostofa Jalal Mohiuddin.

He was re-elected from the same constituency in 2018 under the Awami League's banner.

Haji Salim did not contest the 12th parliamentary election held in January this year. Instead, his son, Mohammad Solaiman Salim, was nominated by the Awami League for the Dhaka-7 seat and won.
