A total of 168 deaths have been documented at 14 government and private hospitals in Dhaka, all victims of the nationwide unrest.
Some of these individuals died while receiving treatment at the facilities.
Apart from that, thousands of people were injured in the clashes that occurred from July 16 to July 22.
Many of the injured were treated at nearby hospitals, but some were brought to private hospitals dead.
Multiple private hospital officials said most of the deaths were not documented, while some hospitals declined to provide information.
Information from govt hospitals
The most numbers of deaths were documented in Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Muhammed Ashraful Alam, deputy director of the hospital, said 99 people died there till July 27 and 97 bodies were handed over to their families.
Dr Md Shafiur Rahman, director of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, said 13 bodies were brought to the hospital.
He said they were all brought dead. Due to the situation, the bodies were handed over to the relatives without autopsy. He, however, declined to disclose their identities.
Meanwhile, two bodies were brought to the National Orthopedic Hospital and Rehabilitation Institute (NITOR). However, their details were not known.
Six people died at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in the capital's Agargaon. The administrative officer of the hospital confirmed this information.
He, however, declined to provide details of the victims. He said these people were brought to the hospital in the midst of the clashes.
The bodies of eight people killed in the clashes were brought to Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital in Uttara. The bodies were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for autopsy, said the hospital's Director Mizanur Rahman.
Information from private hospitals
Among the private hospitals, two died while undergoing treatment at Green Life Hospital in the capital’s Green Road. Both were brought to the hospital with gunshot wounds on July 19. They died the next day, July 20.
Managing Director of the hospital Dr Md Moinul Ahsan confirmed the information.
Besides, information about several injured was found in Popular Medical College Hospital, Labaid Hospital, and Central Hospital in Dhanmond, but no dead bodies came to these hospitals.
In Uttara, most of the casualties were treated at Uttara Adhunik Medical College and Hospital.
Deputy Director of the hospital Major (retd) Hafizul Islam said 11 bodies were brought here from July 18 and 21. “It was not possible to save all their information.”
Two bodies were brought to Shin-Shin Japan Hospital but they were shifted to DMCH later, according to the hospital's administrative department.
Besides, five bodies were brought to Uttara Crescent Hospital on July 18 and 19.
Initially, the clashes in the capital demanding quota reform in government jobs were limited to Dhaka University and its surrounding areas. Later on July 17, the conflict spread to several parts of Dhaka.
Most of the clashes took place in Uttara-Abdullahpur, Badda-Rampura, Mirpur, Jatrabari-Shonir Akhra, Mohammadpur-Bosila and Dhanmondi Science Lab and New Market areas.
