A 20-year-old man was stabbed to death and four others injured in a clash between two groups over setting off firecrackers on Eid night in Jessore’s Sadar Upazila.
The incident occurred around 8 pm on Monday at Birampur in Nowapara Union of the upazila, said Abul Hasnat, officer-in-charge of Jessore Kotwali Police Station.
The deceased was identified as Olid, son of Hridoy Hossain from Madhyapara in Naoda village, Ward-2 of the union.
According to injured witness Apon and residents, Apon, Rashedul, and Shamim were setting off firecrackers on Birampur Bridge when Olid, along with Piyal, Arif, and Mehedi, was passing by.
Olid’s group claimed that the firecrackers had hit them, sparking an argument between the two sides.
The situation escalated, and Olid and his companions allegedly attacked Apon, Rashedul, and Shamim, physically assaulting and stabbing them.
Upon hearing the news, Apon’s father, Ripon Ali, rushed to the scene, but he was also stabbed and injured.
The altercation soon turned into a violent clash, leaving Olid critically wounded.
Locals later rescued Apon, his father Ripon Ali, Shamim, Olid, and Rashedul and admitted them to Jessore General Hospital. While receiving initial treatment, Olid succumbed to his injuries.
Among the injured, Rashedul was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while Apon, Ripon Ali, and Shamim remained under treatment at Jessore General Hospital.
Efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved in the murder, added the OC.
