Gono Odhikar Parishad was set to hold a coffin procession to protest against the Awami League's alleged vote rigging in the last parliamentary election.

The party's leaders and activists accused the police of obstructing them at the beginning of the procession.

This incident occurred on Saturday morning at the Bijoy Nagar intersection in Dhaka.

They alleged that when they continued their procession, the police misbehaved with Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur and General Secretary Md Rashed Khan.

They claimed that they were pushed repeatedly and police threatened to arrest them. During the scuffle, the police broke the coffin, leading to the fall and injury of many top leaders.

Nurul Haque Nur said: "We, around 200 to 250 people, wanted to conduct the procession peacefully. But the police obstructed us and broke our coffin by kicking it. Can the police do this under any law?"

He also alleged that the police were equipped with electric shock batons and sharp objects and said: "There were more police than us. They could have stabbed someone in the crowd or one of their members and then blamed us for it. On October 28, a police member was killed involving members of the Chhatra League and Jubo League and falsely implicated BNP leaders like Mirza Fakhrul."

Before the procession, during a short rally, Nur said: "On the midnight of December 30, 2018, 60% of the votes were rigged. This act deprived people of their voting rights and ruined the election system. Our coffin procession today is a protest against this. We aim to restore democracy."

"We want an end to the politics of clashes, and killings. I want to tell Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to conduct a fair election under a neutral government. If there is fear of a grenade attack like the one on August 21, I promise, we will stand by you," he added.
