An allegation of theft of diamond ornaments worth Tk2 crore from a shop named "Trust Diamond" of Metro Shopping Mall in Dhanmondi of the capital was reported on Sunday.
Police said that a gang of five people stole the diamond ornaments in just 10 minutes.
The incident took place after 10am on Sunday, said Parez Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dhanmondi police station, confirming the matter.
He said, "Different diamond ornaments were stolen by breaking the lock of the shop on the fourth floor of Metro Shopping Mall.
“We are checking the CCTV footage of the market,” said the official.
He further said: “CCTV footage of the market showed that the gang entered the shop at 10:08am by cutting two locks. After 10 minutes they came out. Work is on to find out how many others were in that group.”
Police said that the shop owner primarily claimed that diamond ornaments worth at least Tk2 crore were stolen from the shop.
Hridoy Sarkar, an employee of ‘Trust Diamond', said: “We came in front of the store after 10am and found the lock open. None of the two locks installed in the store. I went inside and saw that everything was empty. Then we inform our higher boss. Diamond ornaments worth more than Tk2 crore were stolen.”
