Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq has said nine political parties, including the BNP, that have sought permission for rallies will be allowed to use the Golapbagh field and not Suhrawardy Udyan.
He was briefing the media on Wednesday about security measures taken centring on the Holy Ashura.
“There is a reservation of the High Court about meetings at Suhrawardy Udyan. We have asked the BNP delegation to consider the Golapbagh field,” said the DMP chief.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday announced the rally for Thursday at a youth rally of the party.
In its continuation, the BNP on Monday sent a letter to the DMP Commissioner seeking permission to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan or Naya Paltan.
The DMP chief said that nine political parties, including the Awami League and the BNP, have applied for permission to hold rallies in the capital, warning that such gatherings might be banned if they create public suffering.
“We will allow some of them to hold rallies after a review,” he also said.
He also warned of possible future restrictions on gatherings if public discontent arises, prioritizing the well-being of the common people.
