Dr Sangjukta Saha, who is accused of negligence and malpractice over the death of Mahbuba Rahman Akhi and her newborn, has now blamed the Central Hospital authorities for the unfortunate incident.
Claiming that Akhi was not her patient, she said: “Central Hospital made false statements about me.”
In a press conference organized at her residence in Paribag of the capital on Tuesday afternoon, she said that when Mahbuba Rahman Ankhi was admitted, she was not in the hospital. The patient was admitted using her name without informing her anything.
She said: "believe me; Central Hospital has committed irregularities by using my name. They did such irregularities, I could not even imagine.”
Complaining against the hospital authorities, Dr Saha said: “No verbal or written consent was taken from me before admitting Akhi to the Central Hospital. During the hospitalization of Akhi, the hospital made a false statement regarding my presence that I am in Bangladesh. Why will they admit a patient using the name who is not in the country? Whose interest is it? If I don't conduct the operation, if I'm not there, when will they admit the patient?”
Challenging the hospital authorities, she said: "The hospital authorities are saying that I was contacted during the admission of Akhi on June 10. I am asking the hospital authorities with an open challenge to produce at least one proof. If your words are true at all, please produce the call record.”
Dr Saha also claimed that there is no basis for the allegation that she was monitoring the operation through video call. Showing the copy of the travel e-ticket, she said to the reporters: “I was in the flight at a height of 36,000 feet above the ground. Information about viewing operations through video calls is unrealistic and false. In my career of 23 years, I have never done an operation through video call.”
She also claimed that a vested quarter is doing these things against the social movement that she has started to stop c-section operations.
The group is misleading the people of the country with false information so that real facts are not covered to hide their own guilt.
She affirmed that Mahbuba Rahman Akhi was not her regular patient.
Expressing grief over the deaths of Akhi and her baby, Dr Saha prayed for the eternal peace of their souls.
Mahbuba Rahman Akhi, reportedly fell victim to deception and improper treatment following a misleading advertisement promising pain-free normal delivery by Professor Dr Sangjukta Saha at the Central Hospital.
She was admitted under Professor Dr Sangjukta Saha's supervision due to labour pains on the night of June 9.
Though Prof Saha was not present at the hospital at the time, the hospital authorities allegedly bluffed the patient's family, saying she is in the hospital.
When attempts for a natural birth failed, an emergency c-section was performed, resulting in the birth of a child who sadly passed away the following day.
The Central Hospital authority suggested her husband Yakub Ali to shift Akhi to another hospital; thus, Akhi was admitted into Labaid.
Mahbuba Rahman Akhi passed away on Sunday at the cardiac care unit (CCU) of Labaid Hospital.
