Md Atiqul Islam, mayor of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), laid the foundation stone of a footbridge in front of East West University in Aftabnagar, Dhaka, on Wednesday.
The bridge will connect Aftabnagar with the Merul Badda end of Hatirjheel, reads a press release.
EWU arranged a program in its Manzur Elahi auditorium to celebrate this occasion.
Mayor Atiqul Islam said the footbridge will be the most beautiful footbridge in the country, to be built at Tk4 crore.
He hoped that the construction of the bridge will be completed within six months.
To protect people from the risk of dengue fever, the mayor urged everyone to keep a watchful eye on their surroundings so that water does not accumulate anywhere during the rainy season.
Syed Manzur Elahi, chairperson, Board of Trustees; Prof Mohammed Farashuddin, chief advisor; Prof MM Shahidul Hassan, vice chancellor of EWU; and the chief engineer of the DNCC as well as two councillors of the area also spoke on the occasion.
Apart from teachers and students of EWU, locals were also present at the event.
Later, Mayor Atiqul Islam planted a tree on the EWU premises and urged everyone to plant more trees to keep the city free from heatwaves.
