Fire Service and Civil Defence on Thursday said Dhaka's Gulistan Patal Market or Gulistan Underground Market is at a very high risk of fire danger.
The fire service, accompanied by law enforcement officers, conducted a fire risk assessment at 12pm, and informed authorities of the matter.
Fire Service and Civil Defence Dhaka Zone-1 Deputy Assistant Director Md Bazlur Rashid said they did not find any source of water.
“It is not possible to supply water in case of a fire. There is no fire alarm system installed. Although fire extinguishers are found, some are expired and others are ineffective,” the official said.
He added that the market's ventilator system was also ineffective and the stairs and paths are narrow.
The fire service had submitted a similar report after visiting the market two years ago, but no action has been taken by the authorities yet, the official also noted.
Another fire service official said that in the past month, they have marked most of the markets in Dhaka Zone-1 as risky, with nine being categorized as highly risky.
