Titas: Gas leak did not cause Gulistan explosion

The actual reason behind the explosion will be known after investigation, a Titas official says

The Titas Gas authorities claimed on Wednesday that the Gulistan explosion did not occur due to gas leakage.

However, the company also claimed that they found a riser inside the building and it was intact.

Director (Operation) of Titas Md Salim Miah gave this information while talking to journalists after visiting the explosion site and collecting evidence in Siddikbazar of the capital.

“We investigated the explosion site in three stages with a gas detector machine. We found a riser in the building but it was intact. The gas detector machine found no evidence of gas. Therefore, the explosion did not occur due to gas leakage,” he said.

Salim Miah further said the true reason behind the explosion will be revealed after investigation.

“We have so far not found any evidence which might indicate that the explosion happened due to gas leakage. However, we are still investigating the site,” he added.

Tuesday's explosion in the capital's Gulistan area so far claimed the lives of 17 people and many injured are receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Officials fear the death toll will likely increase as many of those rescued are critically injured.

The Fire Service has formed a four-member committee to investigate the explosion. The committee was asked to submit a report within five working days.
