Such large explosions are usually caused by gas, says Rahmat Ullah Chowdhury, ADC of DMP

Update : 05 Mar 2023, 09:48 PM

The bomb disposal unit of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) has compared the explosion in a building named "Shirin Mansion" in the Science Laboratory area of the capital to the Moghbazar blast in 2021.

Rahmat Ullah Chowdhury, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of DMP and head of the bomb disposal team of CTTC, said this after visiting the site of the Science Lab explosion on Sunday afternoon.

Rahmat Ullah said: "Initially, we are assuming that the explosion at Science Lab was caused by a gas leakage. The incident is very similar to the Moghbazar explosion in 2021

“Such an explosion can occur if the quantity of accumulated gas is between 5 and 11 cubic feet. Such large explosions are usually caused by gas,” he also added.

The ADC continued: “Our city dwellers should be aware before lighting the electric switch and gas stove. After returning from outside the house, everyone should open the door and window of their house and let out the gas outside first”.

Rahmat Ullah said when asked how a gas explosion could occur in a commercial building: “It's possible that gas accumulated here in any way. The Suarez line may be the route”.

On June 27, 2021, a terrible explosion occurred in a three-story building in Moghbazar. In that incident, 12 people were killed and more than 200 were injured. The blast shook the surrounding area as windows of nearby buildings were completely shattered Numerous vehicles and buildings were damaged.
