Tejgaon police have arrested two people in connection with the stabbing and mugging of Sadek Hossain Chowdhury, assistant personal secretary (APS) to Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Affairs Minister Bir Bahadur U Shwe Sing and the editor of the online news portal paharbarta.com.
Md Kajal and Md Hriday Islam were arrested at two different places on Saturday.
According to the case statement, Sadek Hossain was returning to his Framgate residence in a car after finishing work at the home of the minister on Bailey Road on Friday.
He was talking on his phone and the window of his vehicle was open while in the Karwan Bazar area.
As the vehicle slowed down due to traffic near the Saarc Fountain around 11pm, a snatcher stabbed him with a sharp weapon, leaving him injured.
Later, locals admitted Sadek to Square Hospital with serious injuries.
According to the police, after Sadek Hossain Chowdhury lodged a complaint at Tejgaon police station after the incident, accused Md Kajal was arrested in the Agargaon area under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station on Saturday and based on his information, the other accused, Md Hriday Islam, was arrested at Tejgaon railway station.
There are multiple cases against them at Tejgaon and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police stations.
Officer-in-Charge of Tejgaon police station Apurbo Hasan said the two accused were arrested on charges of attempting to kill the APS by stabbing.
Legal action will be taken against them after investigation, he added.
