The presence of public transport was relatively low in Dhaka on Friday amid tension over the upcoming BNP rally on Saturday.
Commuters were seen waiting on roads for long due to lack of public transport.
Locals at Dhaka's Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Bijoy Sarani and several other places said that apart from public transportations, CNG-run autorickshaws, and rickshaws were also hard to find.
They also noted that the upcoming BNP rally, and the presence of police on the roads are the reason why such a small number of vehicles are operating on Dhaka streets even on a holiday, reports Bangla Tribune.
Nasiuddun Ahmed, who came to Mirpur, from Kakrail said: “I never saw such less traffic in Dhaka on a holiday. Usually roads are filled with vehicles on days like this. People want to spend holidays by roaming around in zoos, and museums.”
In this regard, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) Zainul Abedin told Bangla Tribune: "Today (Friday) is a holiday. The roads are less congested during holidays anyway.”
Meanwhile, BNP activists have started converging on the Golapbagh ground in the Sayedabad area of Dhaka after getting permission from the police to hold the party's mass rally on Saturday there.
The BNP on Friday afternoon finally got permission from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to hold its rally on the Golapbagh ground.
BNP Vice Chairman Dr AZM Zahid Hossain confirmed the matter following a meeting with the chief of the Detective Branch of the DMP, Harun Or Rashid.
