Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Sunday started demolishing several illegal shops of a market beside Nikhet road in Dhaka.
The work on demolishing 148 shops in the "roadside market" mainly selling bedding materials, started at 9am, reports Bangla Tribune.
DSCC Executive Magistrate Muniruzzaman is conducting the drive.
He said: “Two floors of the three-storey market were constructed illegally. We will completely demolish the third floor on Sunday.”
He noted that the market's association had supported DSCC's decision but shopkeepers have been crowding the spot since morning.
Locals said that the second and third-floor shopkeepers had emptied their stores before the work began.
On the other hand, a number of ground floor shopkeepers also began to remove their goods, since some parts of it will be demolished as well.
Several shopkeepers said that DSCC's step would greatly hamper their lives and their businesses would suffer.
