A female Dhaka University (DU) student has allegedly been tortured to death at her in-laws’ residence in Banani.
The girl’s mother-in-law claimed that she had committed suicide.
Elma Chowdhury Meghla, 2015-16 session student of DU’s dance department, was brought to United Hospital around 4pm and declared dead on arrival, Banani police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Noor-e-Azam said quoting doctors.
He said: “Iftekhar Abedin, a businessman based in Canada, was detained after the incident. The father of the victim was at the police station to take legal steps.
“We found injury marks on the body of the deceased. The body has been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy,” he added.
Elma’s uncle Md Iqbal claimed she had been tortured to death by her husband and in-laws.
DU proctor prof AKM Golam Rabbani said: “We told police to scrutinise the incident and determine whether it was a suicide or a murder.”
