Survey: Everyone in Dhaka at risk of dengue infection

The survey showed that the rate of dengue infection in 27 wards of Dhaka North City Corporation and 28 wards of Dhaka South City Corporation is at risk level, says DGHS spokesperson

Based on the data of the Aedes mosquito pre-season survey, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said that everyone in Dhaka is at risk of dengue infection. 

Prof Md Nazmul Islam, director of the DGHS's infectious disease control branch, presented these data of the pre-season survey in the conference room of the health directorate on Tuesday afternoon.

The prevalence of dengue is high in the area around Mugda Medical College Hospital and Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in the capital.

According to the survey data, 3,149 houses were surveyed in 40 wards of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and 58 wards of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). Aedes mosquito larvae were found in 549 houses in there.

Prof Nazmul said: “The accepted method of measuring the density of Aedes mosquito larvae is 'gross index'. If the density of larvae is more than 20%, it means that the situation is out of control. The survey showed that the rate of dengue infection in 27 wards of Dhaka North City Corporation and 28 wards of Dhaka South City Corporation is at risk level.”

According to the pre-season survey data, ward numbers 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 30, 31, 33, 35, 37 and 38 of Dhaka North City Corporation are vulnerable.

In Dhaka South City Corporation, ward numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22, 23, 26, 33, 34, 36, 41, 44, 46, 48, 50, 51, 54, 55, 56 are at risk.

“Two city corporation areas are under similar risk. In general, Aedes mosquito larvae have been found wherever rainwater has accumulated in the entire Dhaka city. In both cities we found the presence of close numbers of larvae,” he said.
