The Chhatra League has filed a case against 175 people over Friday’s clash with Bangladesh Student Rights Council members at a rally held to mark the third death anniversary of Abrar Fahad, who was beaten to death at his Buet dorm on October 7, 2019.

Chhatra League Organizing Secretary Md Nazim Uddin filed the case at Shahbagh police station on Friday night accusing 25 named and 150 unnamed persons, OC Nur Mohammad told Dhaka Tribune on Saturday.

The accused include 18 members of the Abrar Fahad Remembrance Council, Bangladesh Student Rights Council Vice President Md Tarikul Islam and Joint General Secretary HM Rubel Hossain.

The court sent 24 leaders and activists of Chhatra Odhikar Parishad to jail in the case filed by Chhatra League.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahidul Islam ordered them to be sent to jail on Saturday noon.

According to the case statement, the accused, armed with sticks and rods, attacked several people, including Nazim, with the intention of killing them.

Nazim also claimed that he had been severely injured above his right eye, adding that some 150 people launched an attack again when he went to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The Chhatra League has been accused of attacking Friday’s rally held in memory of Abrar Fahad and injuring 20 people, including 13 Bangladesh Student Rights Council members and a rickshaw puller.

The police nabbed some 20 people, including Bangladesh Student Rights Council’s Dhaka University unit President Akhter Hossain and General Secretary Akram Hossain, when they were at DMCH to get treatment.

Abrar murder

In 2019, Abrar, 21, a second-year student of Buet’s electrical and electronic engineering department, was beaten to death by some Chhatra League leaders at Sher-e-Bangla Hall of the university.

He was found dead on the staircase of the dorm in the early hours of October 7 after he had been taken to room No 2011 around 8pm on October 6 and beaten mercilessly.

On October 7, 2019, Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case at Chawkbazar police station.

A tribunal in Dhaka on December 8 sentenced 20 Buet students to death and five others to life in prison for the murder of Abrar.
