Police have identified the attackers of Nahid Hossain, the delivery man killed in the New Market clash, as the ruling Awami League’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League men, say media reports.
The man in a helmet who was seen mercilessly stabbing Nahid in a now-viral video footage has been identified as Bashar Emon.
Emon is a second-year student at Dhaka College and resides in the International Hall of the college.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Media and Communication Division Deputy Commissioner Farooque Hossain told national daily Prothom Alo on Monday that they have confirmed the identities of six people..

He said that police were trying to identify more culprits involved in the clash in addition to the identified suspects.
In addition to Emon, police identified Shahadat Hossain, Qayyum, Sujan Sarker, Shahin Sadeque Mirza and Kausar Hamid, who were involved in hacking Nahid to death, according to the Prothom Alo report.
Citing sources familiar with the investigation, it said all six of them are activists of Chhatra League’s Dhaka College unit.
Among them Qayyum, Emon and Sujon were directly involved in the murder, according to the report.
A Finance student, Shahadat is the follower of Jasim Uddin, a member of the now defunct convening committee of the BCL’s Dhaka College unit.
Emon is a follower of the same panel’s joint convener Samad Azad alias Zulfiqar.

In a video widely circulated on social media and in photos, Emon was seen brutally hacking a lifeless Nahid on his back with a long dagger, used by butchers to slaughter cattle.
Emon is on the run since a case was filed over the murder.
At least 50 people including journalists were injured in a series of clashes between the students and shop owners-workers on April 19, following a row the previous night at fast food shops owned by a BNP leader, Moqbul Hossain.
Police arrested Moqbul on Friday for instigating the violence.
Four cases have been filed over the clashes – two for murder and the two others by police for use of explosives and for sabotage, clashes and obstructing police duty.
