Another young man injured in the recent clashes between the shopkeepers of New Market and students of Dhaka College, died while undergoing treatment at the ICU of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Thursday.
Morsalin, 26, died at 4:35am on Thursday, said Inspector Bacchu Mia of DMCH police outpost.
He used to work at a clothing store in New Market and lived with his wife Oni Akter and children Sumaiya Islam Lamha, 7, and Amir Hamza, 4, at a rented home in Kamrangirchar.
Talking to Dhaka Tribune, the wife said that neither the government nor the shopkeepers came to see them after the incident.
She said she was worried about running family expenses in the absence of her husband, adding that she had no idea how she would file a case against the culprits responsible for her husband’s murder.
Describing the incident, she said her husband worked at a shirt shop in New Market and had left the house to perform prayers on the day. He was injured on the way.
“We went to the hospital at around 3am on Tuesday night but were not allowed to see him," she said.
Earlier, on Tuesday night, twenty-year-old Nahid Hossain, who worked for a delivery service, died in hospital after being injured while passing through the area during the clashes.
He collapsed on the footpath when a brick hit him on the head; he was beaten up by some people. However, Dhaka College students on Wednesday claimed that the hawkers had killed him during the clashes.
Two others seriously injured in the skirmishes – shop worker Mohammad Yasin, 18, and Dhaka College student Md Kakon Chowdhury, 20 – are currently undergoing treatment at DMCH while another student named Mosharraf Hossain was admitted to Square Hospital with critical injuries.
The prime minister has taken responsibility for the treatment of Kakon and Mosharraf.
Shops reopen after two-day closure
Meanwhile, shops in and around New Market began to reopen for business on Thursday morning-- hours after the traders reached a broad agreement with the students of Dhaka College.
The agreement on the reopening came at a nearly four-hour meeting between traders and students beginning at midnight on Wednesday.
Thousands of shops in the New Market area have counted losses due to the closure for two days amid the Eid-ul-Fitr shopping season after violence erupted in the early hours of Tuesday.
A delegation of 10 students held the meeting with four representatives of the businesses at the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR).
Teachers and representatives from the home and education ministries and police also joined the meeting that began at midnight.
Court wants probe reports on June 7
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court on Thursday fixed June 7 for the submission of probe reports in two cases filed by the police over clashes between the traders of New Market and the students of Dhaka College.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Shuvra Chakrabarty issued the order after accepting the police report.
On Wednesday, police filed two cases under the Explosives Act and another over the attacks on the law enforcers.
SM Kaiyum, officer-in-charge of the New Market police station, said that the cases were lodged against around 1,200 unidentified people. The BNP’s Maqbool Hossain was made number one accused in one of the cases.
He was charged with obstructing government work, assaulting and injuring police by throwing brickbats, and carrying out vandalism.
Besides, the names of 23 more accused, including several Juba Dal and BNP leaders, have been included in the case.
Another case was filed by the uncle of Nahid Hossain, a delivery worker who succumbed to injuries at a hospital on Tuesday night, against 150-200 unknown people over the young man’s death. Another injured worker died early on Thursday.
Earlier on Monday night, clashes ensued between the students of Dhaka College and the New Market traders. The students demonstrated on Tuesday morning when the traders tried to open shops, resulting in fierce clashes till 10:30pm.
