New Market traders want to reopen shops without delay

Shop Owners Association president vows to take action against employees who attacked journalists

The shopkeepers of the New Market area have said they want to reopen their shops as soon as possible, following their clashes with the students of Dhaka College.

“We want to open our shops. I want everyone's cooperation. We want to open all shops right after the press conference,” Bangladesh Shop Owners Association President Md Helal Uddin told a media call on Wednesday.

He said the shop owners want to do business peacefully.

Please let us know if they have misbehaved; we will take action against them.”

He also expressed regret over the whole incident and prayed for salvation of the departed soul of the young man who succumbed to injuries sustained during the skirmishes.

Although minor clashes between students and traders in the New Market area are not uncommon, the situation took a much worse turn this time around, with many injuries on either side and the death of a passerby.
