At least 400 small huts of a slum in Kalyanpur area were gutted in a fire on Sunday night.
No missing complaints or casualties were reported till filing of the report at 12:10am.
The fire, originated around 8:30pm at Beltola slum in Notunbazar area, was doused around 10:20pm, Fire Service officials said.
Brig Gen Md Sajjad Hossain, director general of Fire Service, said alleged that the fire was caused due to illegal electricity and gas connections, according to Bangla Tribune.
“The fire started because of the illegal electricity connections, illegal gas lines and loose connection of electricity. There are many small houses and many gas cylinders in the slum which increased the magnitude of the fire,” he added.
He said that the authorities concerned should take necessary steps to disconnect illegal electricity and gas lines to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
He also mentioned that they faced troubles carrying out rescue work as there was no suitable road for the fire trucks to enter the slum.
