A court has ordered Nazmul Hasan Moni, arrested over allegations of setting fire to the Kalshi slum in Pallabi, to be sent to jail.
The order was issued on Tuesday by the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasib Ullah Piyas following a police petition.
The information was confirmed by Saiful Islam, sub-inspector of the Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution Division.
Earlier, the investigation officer of the case, SI Md Mizanur Rahman of Pallabi Police Station, produced the accused before the court and sought permission to keep him in custody.
According to the petition, preliminary evidence suggests the accused was involved in the incident. Police said there is a possibility he could abscond if released on bail, while the information provided by him is currently being verified. The petition also stated that keeping him in jail is necessary for a fair investigation and proper justice.
According to residents, a local youth had an altercation with a shopkeeper in the Kalshi slum on Monday afternoon and allegedly threatened to set the area on fire. After the blaze broke out, locals caught and beat him before handing him over to police.
The fire erupted at the slum on Monday evening. Fifteen units of the Fire Service worked for nearly two hours to bring the blaze under control.
