Around 150 shanties were burnt to ashes at Comilla Potti slum, also known as North Maniknagar area of Mugda in Dhaka.
A massive fire that broke out on Sunday afternoon was later extinguished by firefighters after 85 minutes.
No casualties were reported in the incident, said Proloy Kumar Saha, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mugda police station.
“Maybe the fire broke out at 3:20pm from a clay oven of a shanty,” he told this newspaper.
As soon as the fire broke out, nine fire fighting units rushed to the spot and brought it under control around 4:45pm, said Lima Khanom, duty officer at the Fire Service and Civil Defence control room.
Locals, however, complained that firefighters made delays to reach the spot.
“The delay occurred due to a narrow alley and lack of proper navigation,” said Md Saleh Uddin, assistant director at Fire Service and Civil Defence.
He said a probe body would be formed over the incident and their report would shed a light over the evaluation of damage, as well as, the actual reason behind the fire.
