The Dhaka University (DU) unit of the Chhatra League on Saturday issued a statement asking the university authorities to reopen the dormitories of the university and ensure proper hygiene before holding final year examinations.
"To reduce session jam and let students sit for competitive job exams, it is necessary to hold final examinations soon. But doing so without ensuring students’ accommodation is unfair, at odds with students’ interests, and in no way guardian-like behaviour,” read the statement.
“The university administration’s decision did not reflect the views of students or ensure students’ participation in the decision-making process, nor did it protect students’ right to accommodation.
“We think that reopening the dormitories for examinees, ensuring health protocols and holding exams at different levels is the best solution,” the statement, signed by Chhatra League’s DU unit President Sonjit Chandra Das and General Secretary Saddam Hussain, added.
The organization concluded the statement by urging the authorities concerned to reopen the dormitories considering the interests and expectations of the students and take necessary steps to ensure that health safety guidelines were maintained properly.
Meanwhile, the DU unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad also asked the university administrative body to reconsider its decision and reopen the dormitories before arranging exams.
On December 10, the DU administration decided to hold the final exams of the last semesters of honours and master’s degrees from December 26 to avoid a session jam.
