Vote counting in Dhaka 18, Sirajganj 1 underway

The constituencies had fallen vacant following the deaths of Awami League MPs Sahara Khatun and Mohammad Nasim

The counting of votes for Dhaka 18 and Sirajganj 1 constituencies’ by-elections is going on after balloting ended peacefully at 4pm Thursday.

People cast their votes in Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) in the two constituencies from 8am to 4pm.

A total of six candidates Mohammad Habib Hasan of Awami League, SM Jahangir Hossain of BNP, Mohammad Nasir Uddin Sarkar of Jatiya Party, Mohammad Omar Faruque of Bangladesh Congress, Kazi Mohammad Shahidullah of Gonofront and Mohammad Mahibbullah Bahar of PDP are in the race in Dhaka 18 seat.

Dhaka 18 constituency fell vacant following the death of Awami League lawmaker Sahara Khatun while Sirajganj 1 constituency fell vacant following the death of ruling party MP Mohammad Nasim.

Dhaka 18 consists of wards 1, 17, and 43 to 54 of Dhaka North City Corporation and the airport area. The total number of voters was 577,188.

The Election Commission set up 1, 353 booths in 217 polling stations in Dhaka 18 constituency.

In Sirajganj 1 constituency, Tanvir Shakil Joy of Awami League and Selim Reza of BNP are in the race.

Sirajganj 1 consists of Kazipur, part of Sadar and one municipality and the total number of voters was 345,603.

There were 168 voting centres in this constituency.
