PIB director killed, one injured in Dhaka road crash

The accident took place as a truck coming from opposite direction hit the Dhaka-bound motorbike at Kajla point after 12am, leaving the duo critically injured

A government official has been killed and another person received serious injuries when a truck hit the motorcycle carrying the victims at Kajla point adjacent Hanif Flyover in Jatrabari, Dhaka early Monday, police and hospital sources said.

The deceased was identified as Elias Bhuiyan, 45, a joint secretary of the Information Ministry who was serving as the director (administration) of the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB), Officer-in-Charge of Jatrabari police station Majharul Islam said.

The accident took place as a truck coming from opposite direction hit the Dhaka-bound motorbike at Kajla point after 12am, leaving the duo critically injured.

“Elias Hossain was sitting behind the driver of the motorcycle. They were coming from Narayanganj,” the OC added.

Md Bacchu Miah, inspector of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) police outpost, said the injured were taken to DMCH where doctors pronounced Elias dead.

Police have seized the truck, but the driver managed to escape the scene.

A hospital source said Elias, son of Abul Kashem of Sadekpur village in Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila, was married to Kanij Fatema Moni. He was the eldest son and one ofseven brothers and three sisters.

Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud and State Minister for Information Dr Md Murad Hassan mourned his death and prayed for eternal peace for his departed soul.

PIB Director General Zafor Wazed said Elias Hossain, a deputy secretary (DS) of Public Administration Ministry, joined the PIB in deputation about two years ago. Subsequently, he was promoted to the rank of joint secretary.

He used to stay at Ramna Circuit House. A case has been filed over the accident.
