Coronavirus infected journo freed from forced confinement

Locals locked his house after being alarmed by a status posted by him on Facebook regarding his condition

Update : 04 May 2020, 08:51 AM

Locals locked Nazmul Alam, an online radio journalist, in his flat with his mother, sister, and brother for two days in the Basabo area of Dhaka.

The incident occurred after test results from the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDRB) revealed that Nazmul had Covid-19 infection.

Md Mahbubur Rahman, officer in-charge (OC) of Sabujbag police station, said locals locked his house after being alarmed by a status posted by Nazmul on Facebook regarding his condition.

Nazmul said that he wanted his family members moved to a nearby empty flat, belonging to a sister living outside Dhaka, in order to prevent any risk of transmitting the disease. But locals ignored his plea and locked his family together with him, said the OC.

Learning of the incident, police rushed to the spot to free Nazmul and his family from the forced confinement, he added.

Nazmul claimed that he may have contracted the disease from a colleague who had tested positive for coronavirus back on April 27, said Mahbubur Rahman.
