Law Minister Anisul Huq has said as per law we want to execute the death sentence of Capt (dismissed) Abdul Majed as soon as possible, one of the killers of the Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The minister said this to Dhaka Tribune over phone on Thursday.
"Now the jail authority will call his family members to meet him before execution of the sentence," Anisul said.
“I don't know the exact time of the execution; the jail authority will confirm it,” the minister also said.
On Tuesday, Majed was detained from the capital’s Gabtoli while moving around on a rickshaw.
However, after the arrest, police said that he had been picked up from the city’s Mirpur area.
Majed spent more than 20 years as a fugitive.
One of the 12 assassins awarded the death penalty for the 1975 killings, Majed had been hiding in Libya and Pakistan before moving to neighbouring India and residing there for the last few years, according to media reports at various times.
A counter-terror official told the media that Majed crossed over into Bangladesh on March 26 through the border in Mymensingh after the coronavirus pandemic unfolded.
The Supreme Court on November 19, 2009, upheld a High Court verdict, confirming capital punishment of 12 killers for killing Bangabandhu and most of his family members in a coup d’état on August 15, 1975.
Five killers still remain fugitive -- Col (dismissed) Khandaker Abdur Rashid, Lt Col (relieved) Shariful Haque Dalim, Maj (retd) Noor Chowdhury, Maj (retd) Rashed Chowdhury, and Risaldar Moslehuddin Khan.
Among the 12 convicted, five were executed on January 27, 2010. They were Syed Farooq Rahman, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Bazlul Huda, AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed, and Mohiuddin Ahmed.
Meanwhile, another killer, Aziz Pasha, died in Zimbabwe in 2001.
