Coronavirus: Press Club suspends all activities till March 31

With 17 confirmed cases and a death in Bangladesh so far, the virus has claimed the lives of over 10,000 worldwide, infecting more than 245,000 globally

The National Press Club has decided to suspend all activities of the club from Saturday till March 31.

The decision was taken during a meeting presided over by the club’s President Saiful Alam, a press release signed by the club’s General Secretary Farida Parvin read on Friday.

The decision was taken for the safety of members and staff of the club.

The club authority sought cooperation from its members and apologized for the inconvenience, the release added.

The coronavirus situation in Bangladesh

Within 10 days of the first case of coronavirus being reported in the country, the number of infected people climbed to 17 on Thursday with three fresh cases.

As the coronavirus situation continued to worsen, the government has said it will shut down bus, train and launch services all over Bangladesh.

Experts in the country said although the health authorities have already lost huge amount of time, there is no alternative to making the hospitals ready before community transmission is evident.

The authorities concerned, however, said that taking the experience from the global community into their cognizance, they have already started preparing hospitals.

According to DGHS, they initially find some six such hospitals – Bangladesh Railway Hospital at Kamalapur, Mahanagar General Hospital at Nayabazar, Mirpur Maternity Hospital, Kamrangirchar 31-bed Hospital, Aminbazar 20-bed Hospital and Jinjira 20-bed Hospital.

Later, as Sajida Foundation volunteered their 50-bed hospital in Jatrabari, the number of such hospitals rose to seven, DGHS confirmed.
