2020 Dhaka city polls: 4 AL-backed councillors elected unopposed in DSCC

DSCC Returning Officer Abdul Baten said the four were elected as there were no valid contestants in the respective wards

Update : 10 Jan 2020, 11:48 PM

The Election Commission has announced four councillor candidates, including two in reserved seats, elected uncontested in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election.

All four candidates are backed by the ruling Awami League.

Allotting electoral symbols to the election candidates on Friday, DSCC Returning Officer Abdul Baten told reporters that the four were elected as there were no valid contestants in the respective wards.

"We have already informed them of this development," Baten added.

The councillors-elect are Md Anwar Iqbal of Ward 25, Md Arif Hossain (also the incumbent councillor) of Ward 43, Nargis Mahtab (also the incumbent councillor) of Ward 6, and Nilufar Rahman of Ward 8.

Soon after the announcement, Nargis told journalists that two more candidates joined the polls race, but withdrew their candidature later, paving way to her unopposed victory.

There were five aspirants including Nilufar in the councillor post reserved for women in Ward 8. Four of them pulled out of the election, leaving Nilufar as the lone candidate.

There was no immediate reaction from Anwar Iqbal and Arif Hossain.

A gazette mentioning the four as elected councillors will be published following the polls.

The DSCC and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) elections are scheduled for January 30.

In the DSCC election, seven candidates are vying for the mayoral post, while 335 for 75 ward councillors' posts, and 82 for 25 reserved women councillors' posts.

Around 2.37 million voters will exercise their franchise using electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the DSCC polls.
