Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Mohammad Javed Patwary has said police is investigating the Dhaka University student rape case as a priority.
He made the statement in response to a question by reporters after presenting the IGP badge on the occasion of Police Week 2020 at Rajarbagh Police Lines in Dhaka on Tuesday morning.
The IGP also noted that a proper investigation into a case is not possible if it is put under a timeframe.
"Some cases take time to investigate, whereas some investigations can be completed in an hour. We have to make sure that we are working sincerely," he said.
All police units are handling this case with utmost importance and are working together to catch the perpetrator, the IGP confirmed.
Meanwhile, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Crime) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Krishna Pada Roy told Dhaka Tribune that there was no CCTV camera at the scene.
However, some footage captured on the CCTV camera in the neighborhood has been collected, and is being analyzed, he added.
Earlier on Sunday evening, a second year female student of Dhaka University was raped by unidentified assailant(s) at a secluded place in the city’s Kurmitola area. She left the campus on board a university bus and headed for her friend's house at Khilkhet's Shewra neighbourhood.
On her way, she got off at Kurmitola by mistake around 7pm, her friends and teachers told reporters. She was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around midnight.
As the news spread, protests sparked across the capital on Monday over the rape, with protesters taking to the streets demanding arrest of the culprit within 48 hours. Students marched down or occupied some key roads of the city to demand punishment for the rapist(s).
