Thirty-six hours have been passed since the brutal killing of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student Abrar inside campus hall.

In the time that has passed, Buet Vice Chancellor Prof Saiful Islam has not made a public statement.

The students and teachers tried approaching the VC multiple times, but he remains unreachable.

His cell phone also remains switched off.

Abrar, a second year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the university, was beaten to death on Monday.

The negligent attitude shown by the university VC stirred criticism from different quarters at a time when Buet is going through a massive crisis.

The VC, through another university official, proposed to meet a five-member student representative committee in the face of the protest, instead of showing up in the campus citing his illness.

Buet Director of Students' Welfare (DSW) Mizanur Rahman, on Tuesday morning, said the VC could not come to the campus due to illness.

"However, he proposed to meet a five-member student representative committee," he said.

The demonstrating students demanded the VC to come to the campus, and issue statement regarding Abrar's death. They also threatened to lay seize to main roads if the VC and DSW fail to meet them by 5pm on Tuesday.

Buet Teachers' Association President Dr AKM Masud said Abrar Fahad died due to the failure of the university authorities’ to protect students.

Dr AKM Masud said: “It was the duty of the university authorities to ensure full safety and security of every residential student on campus, but they have failed to do so.

The university authorities must take the responsibility of Abrar’s murder, he added.

Meanwhile, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader also said that the Buet VC was sick.
