Students of Jagannath University (JnU) have evicted at least 30 shops and a human hauler stop which have been illegally put up in front of the university’s second main entrance.
JnU Proctor Mostafa Kamal confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday.
He said a large number of students reached the venue around 12pm on Tuesday, chanting their demands to demolish the illegal structures that were there for quite a long time.
“We had earlier served several notices to the shop owners and human hauler stand authorities, asking them to move their establishments, but all our efforts were in vain. Hence, around 100 students opted to do the job themselves,” he added.

“However, nothing unprecedented happened during the eviction drive,” he further said, adding that “the university authorities sat with several police officials regarding the matter later in the day”.
Several students claimed that they gave the shop and human hauler owners a 24-hour ultimatum on Sunday, requesting them to vacate the area so the second main entrance can be used as usual.
The ultimatum was extended by another day, but the scenario did not change until Tuesday’s eviction drive.
The gate, which is among three main entrances, has not been in use for the last 4-5 years, said the proctor.
When asked if the agitated students chanted any political slogan, he replied in the negative.
Dhaka Tribune, however, could not manage any comment from the shop owners or the authorities of the human haulers , in regard to this matter.
