BRTA acts to stop ‘Gate Lock,’ ‘Seating Service’ in Dhaka

The BRTA has begun drives to stop private buses from providing illegal "Seating Service" or "Gate Lock" services. The magistrates of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) are conducting the drives at Asad Gate, Agargaon, Tejgaon, Jatrabari and Dhaka airport areas. Dhaka Sarak Paribahan Samity, an association of passenger bus owners in the capital, on April 4 decided that these services would not be allowed to operate, as additional fares were being charged illegally from passengers for the services. Meanwhile, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said the government and the members of bus owners’ associations would strictly monitor the drives to ensure that these illegal services never resume in future.Mahmud Hossain Opu/DHAKA TRIBUNE Mahmud Hossain Opu/DHAKA TRIBUNETalking to reporters at Satrasta intersection on Sunday morning, the minister also hoped that the drives would bring discipline in the transport sector. He added that the government would continue drives against illegal bumpers, angles or carriers in the buses which often lead to accidents. According to Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Malik Samity, over 4,500 buses under around 150 transport companies ply in Dhaka every day.
