Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested three people with arms, and ammunition in Dhaka.

They recovered one AK-22 rifle, four foreign pistols, one foreign revolver, and a total of 47 rounds of ammunition from the arrestees, who are: Khan Md Faisal; Md Ziaul Abedin alias Jewel; and Md Jahed Al Abedin alias Rubel.

DB Joint Commissioner Mahbub Alam confirmed the matter at a press briefing yesterday.

"Acting on a tip-off, a DB team raided a house in Sipahibagh, Khilgaon on Friday around 8:30pm, and arrested them with the arms and ammunition," Mahbub informed reporters.

After primary interrogation, police found that the arrestees worked in various areas of Dhaka, committing crimes in exchange for money. "Extortion, and murder were their main tasks," he said.

"We are investigating how the arms entered the country, and who else was involved," the joint commissioner added.

DB sources said that two of the arrested—Jewel and Rubel—are brothers, who already have three to four cases filed against them. Their other brother, Leon, had been killed in an alleged crossfire seven years ago.

A man who goes by the name Lalat, has been identified as the local leader of this gang of hitmen. Another man is controlling the gang from a Middle Eastern country abroad, the DB sources added.
